Privacy Policy

Second Chapter is a European media and community project exploring how technology is reshaping business and society. This policy explains what personal information we collect through secondchapter.to, why we collect it, and the choices you have.

Who we are

The site is run by Jisho Ltd, at the registered address 5-7 New Road Radcliffe, Manchester M26 1LS, with the company number 17394198. We are responsible for your personal information. We are registered with the UK Information Commissioner's Office under registration number ZC243326. If you have any questions about this policy or your information, write to us at info@secondchapter.to.

What we collect

When you sign up with "SAVE ME A SEAT!"

We ask for your first name, last name and email address. You can then tell us the type of organisation you work for and up to three sectors you work in, in order of importance. We save each answer as you give it, so anything you have already answered is kept even if you stop partway.

We also keep a record of your agreement: the wording you agreed to, the version of this policy at the time, when you agreed, and that you signed up through the prelaunch page.

Signing up creates a member account for you, which we will use to give you access to Second Chapter when it launches.

When you sign in

When you sign in, we keep a record of your session so you stay signed in: when it started and when it expires, the IP address you signed in from and the type of browser and device you used. We use this to keep your account secure, for example, to spot a sign-in that is not yours. We delete it when the session ends, after at most seven days without use.

When you visit the site

We keep a simple record of each visit: the city, country and time zone your connection comes from, and the time of the visit. We work these out from your IP address when the page loads, but we do not store your IP address. To count each visitor only once a day, we turn it into a code that changes every day and cannot guess. We do not record visits from search engines and other automated tools.

Our homepage shows a short list of recent visits by city and local time, but visitors can see cannot see your name, email address or anything else that identifies you.

We also use Vercel Web Analytics to count page views. It tells us which pages are read and your type of browser and device, only as totals. It does not use cookies, does not store your IP address, and cannot follow you from one day to the next or across other websites.

You can turn this off at any time with the "Don't count my visits" switch on this page. It is saved only in your browser, so you will need to turn it off again on each browser you use.

Cookies

We do not use advertising or analytics cookies, and visiting the site does not set any cookies. Our visitor counting described above works without cookies. If you sign in to an account, we set a cookie that keeps you signed in. It is essential for signing in and is not used for anything else.

Why we use your information

To send you our emails: a confirmation when you sign up, your sign-in links, news about the launch, and the confirmation and sign-in links because you asked for them, and the launch news and newsletter because you agreed to receive them (your consent).

To understand who our readers are, from your organisation type and sectors, so we can shape what we publish and, later, what we offer you. We do this with your consent.

To run the site, keep it and your account secure, and see how many people visit, which pages they read and where they come from. We do this because it is in our legitimate interest to run and improve Second Chapter, and it has very little impact on your privacy. You can object to it at any time.

Who we share it with

We do not sell your personal information. We use a small number of service providers:

Vercel, which hosts the site, tells us the approximate location of a connection and counts page views;

Neon, which hosts our database;

Resend, which sends our emails and keeps our mailing list; and

Attio, which keeps our contact records, so we can follow up with the people who sign up. We share your name, email address, and the answers you give when you sign up (organisation type, job function, and sectors).

Some of these providers are based in, or use servers in, the United States. When your information leaves the European Economic Area, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as the UK International Data Transfer Addendum and the standard contractual clauses approved for that purpose.

How long we keep it

We keep your account, your answers and your consent record until you ask us to delete them. Sign-in session records are deleted when the session ends. If you unsubscribe from our emails, we keep a note that you unsubscribed so that we do not email you again. We keep visit records for 12 months. Page view metricss do not identify you.

Your rights

You can ask us to give you a copy of your information, correct it, delete it, or restrict or object to its use, or you can also ask us to send it to you or to another organisation in a common format. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time; this does not affect anything we did before.

You can unsubscribe from our emails at any time with the link at the bottom of each newsletter, or by writing to info@secondchapter.to.

To use any of these rights, including closing your account, write to info@secondchapter.to. We will reply within one month.

If you are unhappy with how we handle your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk) in the UK, or to the data protection authority where you live in the EU. We would appreciate the chance to put things right first.

Children

Second Chapter is not intended for anyone under 16, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under the age of 16.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will publish the new version here with its date.

Visit counting

Your visits are counted anonymously, as described above.
